Maintaining municipal infrastructure requires a strategic approach to public safety and long-term asset management. For the City of Wetaskiwin, civic buildings serve as high-traffic hubs for residents, staff, and visitors. These facilities face a heavy seasonal “soil load” consisting of abrasive road salt, gravel, and melting snow. To protect their interior flooring from premature wear and to minimize slip-and-fall hazards, the City implemented a professional-grade floor protection program designed for maximum durability.
In a public sector environment, entrance matting acts as a critical safety barrier. The goal is to capture contaminants at the threshold, ensuring that the transition from the outdoors to the building’s interior is clean, dry, and safe for all citizens.
The Solution: High-Performance Zonal Safety
For this project, the focus was on deploying a permanent, high-traction matting system capable of handling the unique demands of Alberta’s climate. By moving away from standard retail rugs and toward engineered commercial solutions, the City has established a more effective defense against the elements.

As seen in the project photos, the installation utilizes a specialized scraper/wiper system. Here is the technical breakdown of the implementation:
- Multi-Directional Scraper Surface: We utilized a high-denier material with a distinct “nub” pattern. This texture is specifically designed to reach into the deep treads of winter footwear, mechanically dislodging packed snow and grit from every angle.
- Expansive Walk-Off Zones: As shown in the images, we provided large-format coverage that spans the entire width of the entryway. This ensures that every visitor, regardless of their path, must take multiple steps on the matting, which is essential for neutralizing moisture before it reaches polished interior surfaces.
- Strategic Salt Masking: The Charcoal mottled color was selected as a specialist-grade necessity. This pattern effectively hides the white “salt-bloom” residue and grey dust common in Wetaskiwin, keeping the entrance looking professional and clean throughout the day.
- Tapered Safety Edging: To accommodate the diverse needs of the community, every mat is finished with industrial-grade safety borders. This ensures a low-profile, flush transition for strollers, wheelchairs, and residents with limited mobility, effectively eliminating trip hazards at the door.

Municipal Asset Preservation
The real value of a permanent matting system in a city facility is found in its contribution to the building’s longevity. By capturing up to 90% of incoming contaminants at the door, the City of Wetaskiwin has effectively “automated” a significant portion of its floor maintenance.
This proactive approach prevents abrasive sand and salt from acting like sandpaper on the building’s primary floor finishes, which significantly reduces the long-term costs of floor stripping, waxing, and repair. It is a smart, authoritative investment in civic infrastructure that prioritizes resident safety while being fiscally responsible with facility maintenance budgets.
